Field trip to the Durham Bulls work-based learning and hiring event on Friday, December 16 from 10:00-11:30
Details of the field trip: Field trip for up to 40 interested Durham Future PLC students on Friday, December 16 from 10:00-11:30 at Durham Bulls Athletic Park for work site tour, introduction to the jobs and the hiring process, and career-skills building opportunities hosted by the program managers. The Bulls will offer a work site tour, detailed information about their part-time seasonal jobs (they describe these positions as a very flexible, sporadic employment around home games--a great job for students). Details of the jobs: All are part-time, seasonal work. About half are filled each season with returning employees, so students who earn a job could be lining up summer employment for futures summers too. Their HR director is willing to be as flexible as possible with our students around criminal background (finding jobs in appropriate departments even where crimes may make them ineligible in a given department). However, violent crimes are a non-starter for them. All employees will have to pass a drug test and provide I-9 right-to-work documentation. All employees will need references, so we can begin working with students on how to develop professional/academic references now. Wages begin at $8.50/hr. Hours vary around the season schedule, so can included multiple shifts a week or stretches during away games of 10 days with no work. The training begins in March and the season concludes at the end of August. There will be positions in ticketing, concessions, and grounds. These are entry-level jobs, but the team at the Durham Bulls see these as a great way to build skills, résumés and references for future career work. Students MUST be at PLC at 9:00 a.m. Friday, December 16th. The bus will depart PLC no later than 9:30 a.m. We will return to PLC at 12 noon.
